Lessons learned from being bankrupt and homeless

Hey friend

Life can deal some tough lessons. Some we bring on ourselves. Others may just be cycles of life such as economic downturns, pandemics, aging and just…stuff.

I recently reflected on some lessons learned during one of the toughest times of my life - the 2008 downturn that impacted our companies and personally left us homeless and bankrupt by 2013.

It would be easy to blame the economy or the government or business partners or just about anyone other than myself. But we must take responsibility if we are live a victorious life and not the life of a victim.

What did I learn about myself?

I had an addiction that may not have caused our hardships, but it sure did not help it.

Was I addicted to drugs? Alcohol? Porn? Sex? TV? Sports?

No, my addiction was more subtle but possibly as dangerous.

I was "addicted to more".

Sounds odd. There are no groups or organizations or doctors that discuss this addiction. But it is real and many suffer from it. In fact it is possible that almost everyone in our modern culture can succumb to this addiction to various degrees.

I dig deeper on this week's Seek Go Create episode. I won't lie, this was a tough topic to cover.

PS: I wrote my recent novel Coach with the goal of sharing a motivational story that had some timeless principles. I did not realize until finishing the story and reading through multiple times that it had many other themes…one of those being this concept of "addiction to more".
